A temporary community hub, part of an ecosystem for artists in Benin
The solution
This pavilion serves as a vital anchor and community center for a local artist’s studio. Conceived as a high-quality “placeholder,” this temporary structure will provide an immediate space for gathering, exhibition, and creative exchange while the community prepares for its long-term permanent home. The goal was to create something that feels intentional and culturally resonant, proving that even a transitional space can be a significant architectural statement.
The pavilion is designed to be completely open and breathable. The structure features a soaring, overhanging roof that provides deep shade, protecting the open roof as well as the interior from the intense sun and tropical rains while allowing for constant, natural airflow.
The interior is left open and flexible, allowing the artists to adapt the space for workshops, gallery showings, or community meetings. By utilizing natural materials and a form that lends itself to use as a gathering space, we’ve created a pavilion that feels deeply rooted in area and can be torn down and reused. It is a functional sanctuary that celebrates the creative energy of Benin, serving as a living proof of concept for the permanent structure to follow.
