A block of 9 flats designed to make the most of the limited space and tropical weather
The solution
This design for the Igando Flats was really about rethinking how we live in a tropical city like Lagos. Rather than a standard apartment block, we created something that feels more personal and connected to the culture. The most striking feature is the “arched” face of the building—these deep-set windows do more than just look good; they act as a natural shield against the intense sun, keeping the interiors cooler while the patterned screens give residents privacy without blocking the view.
Inside, the layout is all about making the most of the space for a modern “live-work” lifestyle. Whether it’s the larger one-bedroom units or the more compact studios, every home is designed to catch a breeze and feel open. We used large sliding glass doors so that the living rooms feel like they flow right out onto the balconies, making even the smaller spaces feel airy and bright. By using earthy, textured finishes and raising the building to keep the ground floor open for parking and airflow, we’ve tried to create a home that is both a stylish sanctuary and a practical response to our local climate.
